Glimpses of Me

I often found myself looking at the world around me, trying to find a semblance of representation in my surroundings, of something that reminded me, of myself. As an Indian, born and raised here in the West, I was never able to form a deep connection with my culture throughout my childhood; it was only recently that I have begun to appreciate and accept this part of my identity. However, there are many aspects of my cultural and religious identities that overlap through the context of living my entire life here. It is this intersectionality of my identities I wish to capture in my work; of what it is like to live as an Indian woman today in this contemporary age. My works are cropped in a way to give glimpses into the different parts that make up my identity while also combining different aspects of traditional Islamic and Indian art through the use of colour and bold outlines. With the use of Burnt Sienna as an outline rather than an underpainting, I chose to revert traditional European artistic techniques as a means to confront the precedents set surrounding artistic practices and further develop a style that more closely relates to my identity.
